iTunes Plus

What is iTunes Plus?

iTunes Plus is the new standard format for content on iTunes. Content available in iTunes Plus is in our highest-quality 256 kbps AAC encoding and is delivered to the customer without Digital Rights Management (DRM).

Is there a catalog report that can tell me if an album or music video is currently selling as iTunes Plus or if it needs to be upgraded in order to be live on iTunes?

Yes. You have the option to check two catalog report types available in Catalog Reports on iTunes Connect to be sure the content is selling in iTunes Plus format.

The Non-iTunes Plus Music or Non-iTunes Plus Music Video reports will list all content that is still DRM'd therefore not live on iTunes. This report will also tell you exactly what you need to fix in order to make the content live again. Column H in the report will tell you if there is an audio issue. If you see Yes in this column, you will need to redeliver the content with lossless audio. We recommend redelivering your music content through the latest version of iTunes Producer to ensure a successful delivery. The territory columns of this report will tell you if you do not have a contract to sell iTunes Plus content or if you have iTunes Plus clearance set to false in the respective territory.

The Music or Music Video reports will give you two pieces of important information that are required to be true in order for your album to be live in iTunes Plus. The first is your iTunes Plus clearance. This needs to be showing a Y in the territory-specific column for which you will be selling that album in iTunes Plus. If it shows a N then you need to update this clearance in iTunes Connect.

The second is your audio information. In column K, you can see if your audio is in the correct format for iTunes Plus or not. The column will indicate TRUE if iTunes already has a lossless audio source required to sell the album at higher quality for iTunes Plus or FALSE if iTunes does not have the proper audio. If an album indicates FALSE, you must re-encode the album's audio and redeliver the album to make it eligible for iTunes Plus. See Using iTunes Producer 3.1.1 for Music for more details about redelivery.

How do I make sure that my content is selling in iTunes Plus?

Music content cannot be made available on the iTunes Store unless it has been delivered in a lossless format such as Apple Lossless (ALAC) and you have a current iTunes Plus agreement.

To make sure all of your music content is available on the iTunes Store, take the following steps:

  1. Verify that you have a current iTunes Plus agreement. You can see your agreement status and request new agreements per territory in Agreements, Tax, and Banking on iTunes Connect.
  2. Download and review the Non-iTunes Plus Music report or the Non-iTunes Plus Music Video report from Catalog Reports on iTunes Connect. Albums or music videos marked Blacklist under a specific territory are not currently available in iTunes Plus for that territory.
  3. Find all songs or music videos flagged in Column H of the Non-iTunes Plus report because the iTunes Store does not have a lossless audio source for that song or video.
  4. Resubmit these songs or music videos in a lossless format such as Apple Lossless (ALAC). Songs, albums, and music videos not listed in the Non-iTunes Plus Music report are already available in iTunes Plus format and do not require any further action.
