Lyrics on Apple Music and the iTunes Store

February 22, 2017

We've made some changes to improve the delivery of lyrics to Apple:

TTML File Format
We are now accepting lyrics in Timed Text Markup Language (TTML file format). For an overview of TTML, and to view an example XML delivery, see the updated iTunes Video and Audio Asset Guide.

Music Specification update
The new <lyrics_file> tag has been added to support delivery of lyrics in TTML format. Additionally, we've made some changes to improve content updates and music video deliveries. See what's new in iTunes Package Music Specification Version 5.2.7.

Metadata best practices
The Music Style Guide now includes guidelines for providing lyrics to Apple. See recommendations for:

  • Space and structure
  • Capitalization
  • Punctuation and formatting
  • Slang and censored language
  • Numbers
  • Spoken and non-word vocals

Following these best practices will help ensure consistency, and will help us provide the best experience for customers.
