Ratings and advisories requirements for transactional movie content
Apple requires ratings for all movies, including shorts and concert films. If your movie didn’t receive a rating from an official ratings board, you should use Unrated or Not Rated. Be aware of the distinction between Unrated and Not Rated. For countries that do not support these classifications, you must choose another rating.
Unrated
- Indicates the movie is explicit and may not be suitable for children
- Will be restricted by the Apple Parental Control feature
Not Rated
- Indicates the movie has not been rated by a movie review board; carries no implication about the suitability of the content for children
- Will not be restricted by the Apple Parental Control feature
Ratings and advisories
The following countries have specific guidelines around ratings. Advisories are required for these countries but are currently optional for others.
Brazil
Movies delivered for distribution in Brazil need a local rating. To obtain a rating, do one of the following:
- Submit the movie to the National Secretariat of Justice of the Brazilian Ministry of Justice (NSJ) for an official review and rating classification.
- If the movie has never received an official rating for distribution in Brazil or if the movie is not subject to an official rating, you can designate the appropriate rating yourself using the guidance issued by the NSJ.
The NSJ also issues content descriptors that act as consumer advice and are specific to each movie. For self-rated content, if you choose to designate descriptors, they should be selected in line with the same guidance. For examples of descriptions and how to deliver them, see these details.
India
India has consumer advice labels that are specific to each movie.
- Where consumer advice has been issued, it must be displayed on the Apple TV app.
- Delivering an advisory is not required for movies with a U rating; Apple will always display the advisory “Content Suitable for All Ages” for U-rated movies.
- The remaining ratings (U/A 7+, U/A 13+, U/A 16+, and A) require at least one advisory.
For a list of applicable advisories and how to deliver them, see these details.
Korea
For movies to be made available in Korea, both a rating and rating classification number are required. Advisories are required if issued by the Korea Media Rating Board (KMRB). A rating specifies the appropriate ages suitable for viewing the film. The advisory specifies any consumer advice about the film’s content.
For iTunes Extras, all videos must be rated. They must contain a burnt-in pre-roll that displays the rating. If your iTunes Extras are not appropriately rated, do not make them available in Korea.
For details on how to deliver ratings, ratings classification number, and advisories see these details.
New Zealand
Movies delivered for distribution in New Zealand need an age-rating classification from the Film and Video Labeling Body (FVLB). The consumer advisories must specifically cover online distribution. A label issued for DVD distribution only is not sufficient. For the FVLB to issue a label for a movie, it must be reviewed and classified by the New Zealand Office of Film and Literature Classification, or have been given an unrestricted classification in Australia or the UK. For more information on the classification and labeling process, contact the FVLB at enquiries@fvlb.org.nz.
In addition to the age-rating classification, the FVLB issues consumer advisories specific to each movie. It is a legal requirement that the consumer advisories are displayed on the Apple TV app. For more information and how to deliver these advisories, see these details.
South Africa
Movies delivered for distribution in South Africa need to be submitted to the Film and Publication Board (FPB) for an official review and rating. The FPB can be contacted at clientsupport@fpb.org.za.
In addition to ratings, the FPB issues consumer advice labels that are specific to each movie. Where consumer advice has been issued, it must be displayed on the Apple TV app. For information on how to deliver them, see these details.
Vietnam
The ministry responsible for ratings in Vietnam requires that ratings and advisories be applied to movie titles available in the Apple TV app. When provided by the ministry, include a valid advisory in your delivery.
For advisory values and how to deliver them, see these details.
