Create Book Cover Art

We’ve always been encouraged not to judge a book by its cover, but enticing cover art can make a reader more likely to purchase your book. Cover art isn’t required during a pre-order period. Apple Books generates a basic cover art image if you don’t provide one, but we highly recommend that you supply your own. Cover art is required before the book’s release date.

Cover art requirements

Cover art must be in PNG or JPEG format, RGB colorspace, and at least 1400 pixels on its shortest side. For an average paperback book, this could be 1400 (width) x 1873 (height) pixels, since these books are generally taller than the width.

If you’re not using iBooks Author or Pages to create your book, you will also need to create in-book cover art. This is the image that displays when a reader opens your book. In-book cover art should comply with our requirements for interior images.

Note: Book creation is moving to Pages. As of July 1, 2020, iBooks Author will no longer be available to new users. iBooks Author can still be used on macOS 10.15 and earlier, but there will be no new updates. Learn more.
