How to Proofread Your Ebook

You wouldn’t write a book without editing it, so why publish a book without making sure it looks good on your device? In the same way that editing is a vital step of the writing process, proofing is a vital step of publishing your book in a digital space.

Both iBooks Author and Pages allow you to preview your files directly within the app. Learn more about previewing your books with Apple tools:

Note: Book creation is moving to Pages. As of July 1, 2020, iBooks Author will no longer be available to new users. iBooks Author can still be used on macOS 10.15 and earlier, but there will be no new updates. Learn more.

If you created your EPUB file in another book-creation tool, follow these instructions to make sure it looks great on Apple Books:

  1. Open Apple Books on your Mac.
  2. In the Books menu, click Preferences.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Select “Enable Advanced menu in menu bar.”
  5. In the Advanced menu, click Add EPUB to Library as Proof.

Edits you make to proofs using your designated book-creation app appear automatically in Apple Books on your Mac and connected iOS devices.

Validate your EPUB file

All EPUB books submitted to Apple Books must pass the most recent version of EPUBCheck. Use one of the available EPUB validation tools to check your file. If you validate your EPUB file and get errors, review the explanation of errors from the developers of EPUBCheck.
